(B,D)277 mi / 445 kmLOCAL FAVORITEHISTORIC SPOT The Basilica Cistern, also known locally as “the sunken palace,” is the underground cistern built during the Byzantine Empire to supply water to parts of the then city of Constantinople. An incredible structure with 336 pillars holding up a magnificent vaulted ceiling over an artificial freshwater lake. It can be classed as an early example of recycling as the builders made use of stone structures from earlier temples – one of the most famous “recycled stones”, that can still be seen, is the upside down head of Medusa. (B,D) 217 mi / 350 kmLOCAL FAVORITEARCHITECTURAL FEATS In 1972 a local farmer was curious as to why the excess crop water disappeared so fast - it was the start of the discovery of Ozkonak underground city. Carved into the volcanic rock around the 4th century BC, this city was formed of 10 levels and built to protect about 60 000 people from religious persecution and war. To ensure they could all survive for up to 3 months the city had its own ventilation system, water supply and moving stone doors with a hot oil defence system. Any attackers trying to enter the city would be stopped in their tracks by the hot oil being poured over their heads!ANKARA.jpg

Question: How many suitcases can I take with me on my trip?
Question: Is Airfare Included in the Price?
We have gone on several globus tours and always had a great experience. the hotels are all top notch, the travel arrangements great, the destinations and side trips wonderful.

This trip to Portugal, Morocco and Spain was wonderful. A great experience from start to finish. Globus Tours are top notch.
It's usually hard to beat our expectations of a trip but Avalon most certainly did it. The atmosphere delivered, the food, the excursions and their wonderful staff made our vacation more than memorable.
Globus always provides very high quality. We were completely satisfied with our experience.
We have traveled many times with Globus. We consistently have found this tour operator to be reliable.
Excellent itinerary, outstanding guide, and a wonderful trip to a delightful country I would strongly recommend.
I love working with Karen.
The tour cities and sites we visited were all great. The pace of the tour was good (not rushed with time to rest, shop or sight see on our own). Our tour director was fabulous (good communicator, knowledgeable, nice sense of humor). Our driver was a wonderful driver, I always felt safe. The extra excursions (I purchased all 4) were excellent and reasonably priced. I will use Globus again.
Globus Escapes are an economical way to travel during the off season. For me, I often prefer the off-season because there are fewer crowds. I especially appreciate the local tour guides in each area.
